Lost Ones

"
Lost One... Let go to get one.
Get One... Lose some to win some.
Story of a champion.

- from the new Jay-Z album

Would winning be so sweet if you won all the time?

Its been a while since I've blogged. I'm trying not to use my preacher voice, but it seems pointless if there is no point to convey. I'll just ask the REAL question...

What really matters?
A wife of a friend of mine was in a very minor car accident today. He let her use his car - Acura TL. Of course he knows what's most important... she's alright and a little shook up. Meanwhile, she's on the phone with him and she feels terrible because she knows how much he likes his car. Seems like an obvious situation, but I found it interesting because when it really matters, what really matters, matters. So why care so much about something any other time? I love material things, gadgets, technology, etc... its the engineer in me. So I'm often guilty of caring a little too much about them. Recently however, I've realized that I tend to not care quite so much about the material things, and I honestly believe that I can attribute that to my move from home. Being so far away from family and friends I grew up with really puts things into perspective. I'm definitely glad I made the move. It a wonderful learning experience. I've learned about a different area of the country and the people here, and I've experienced a level of independence that even NYC can't give you. The internet and phone keep me connected to those who are most important, but it is not a substitute. The situation isn't perfect, but I'm happy.

I Love NSBE
I went to a NSBE conference (Region First FRC) a few weekends ago. FRC is by far my favorite conference. I had a great time there not only meeting new friends and reconnecting with old friends, but also reminding myself why I love NSBE so much. FRC 2001 was my first conference and every year I re-live the experience. I realized then but I can articulate it now... the images common at NSBE conferences are rarely seen elsewhere. Seeing 800 aspiring Black engineers poised to change the world in one place is a wonderful sight... something you won't see anywhere else.

I'm very focused on my career here. To an extent, its almost all I can focus on, especially with the hours I work. Even plans for business school are career driven, and from time to time I take time out to touch base with friends and family. NSBE is perfect middle ground for me, and it really allows me to devote some of my time to develop our next set of leaders, and the engineering students.

I've talked enough. I'm trying to get back into blogging. I try to be too profound sometimes, so bare with me as I find my voice again.
